Shield Our State is a 501(c)4 organization with the goal of developing bold new solutions to Florida’s impending hurricane financial crisis. Shield Our State promotes a statewide public-private partnership which would provide financial security to residential property owners in the event of future hurricane disasters. We are focused on a solution that provides all homeowners and commercial-residential property owners with more financial security, stabilizes our insurance rates and restores the private residential insurance market in our state.
As concerned citizens, we're alarmed that many of us are losing our home insurance, that many private insurers aren't writing any new policies and that everyone's tax dollars are being used to provide basic coverage throughout the state.
Leading the Shield Our State Coalition is a seasoned expert in Florida's property insurance world, Dan Montgomery. Montgomery is joined by a group of concerned Florida business people with diverse and comprehensive backgrounds who are determined to find bold new solutions to Florida's impending hurricane financial crisis.
Dan Montgomery is Managing Director of the Shield Our State Coalition – a group of concerned and committed Floridians who have come together to work with state leaders, private companies, citizens and other stakeholders to craft a bold, residential insurance solution that is truly in the public interest. Dan recently took a leave from claims consulting to devote himself full-time to the resolution of the hurricane insurance crisis.
Dan was one of the founders of the ”St. Petersburg Group,” a group of nine volunteer executives, who devoted over two years to the research of facts and data which led to Dan’s writing of the business plan “Solving the Crisis.” Dan also created a website, providing a public forum to keep citizens updated on the perils of our present system of insuring hurricanes and an explanation of a more efficient method to deal with the problem. Dan has presented the plan to state and federal legislators, elected officials, civic groups, state and national associations, economists, actuaries, financial analysts and the news media.
Dan began his career as a real estate broker and developer. He then moved to Wall Street, where he specialized in commodities trading, and subsequently founded and ran an international trade and finance company. During the past 16 years, Dan has become an expert in catastrophe insurance claims and reconstruction, contracting his services to major national and international carriers, as well as negotiating claim settlements on behalf of policyholders against their carriers. Dan has adjusted, reviewed and managed catastrophe claims and teams nationwide and has held certifications with the Florida Windstorm Underwriting Authority, the National Flood Insurance Program, claims appraisal umpire under the Florida Windstorm Association, along with numerous industry advanced training seminars. Dan has also served as the Florida Regional General Adjuster for the world’s leading claims management company.
